Mohammad's story, from the beginning
A different beginning
Mohammad was born on February 11, 2023. From his first moments, he struggled to breathe, barely cried or moved, and needed resuscitation and hospital care. We had learned before his birth that we were both carriers of the LAMA2-related genetic change, but nothing could prepare us for those first moments.
Home, then an emergency
After four days, Mohammad came home without medical equipment. Less than two weeks later, he stopped breathing and his heart stopped beating. We rushed for help; resuscitation succeeded and he was transferred by ambulance to intensive care. I was there and witnessed it all.
An ICU-like room at home
About a week and a half later, Mohammad returned home, this time with a ventilator, suction machine, cough-assist device, nebulizer and oxygen concentrator. A room in our home became almost like an intensive care unit. The first months were incredibly hard, and we learned his care step by step.
Remembering his brother Issa
Our previous experience with medical equipment helped us care for Mohammad. Before him, we had lived through a difficult journey with his brother Issa, whom we lost. Issa will always be part of our family and our story.
